How To Use File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

In order to transfer files from your computer to the AVCI servers, you must use File Transfer Protocol software or FTP.  You may download a shareware version by clicking here:  WS-FTP.

Once the download is complete, you can launch the software and configure it as follows. YOUR VERSION MAY BE DIFFERENT!  This tutorial is intended to make you familiar with how FTP works and not as a step by step guide.

You will need to configure the FTP software to your web page/site.  Begin by clicking on the button labeled "New."

Next, enter the name of your web pages/site into the line titled "Profile Name."  This is only for your future reference, so you may use any name you wish.

Enter the host name/address of your web pages/site.  This will most likely be in a www.domainname.com format.

FOR PERSONAL PAGES:  The Host Name/Address will be bluejay.avci.net.

Enter the User ID (Login) which was provided by AVCI.net.

Enter the Password which was provided by AVCI.net.

If you wish to save your password for future use, click the box next to the words "Save Pwd."

Click "Apply" to save this configuration.

Click "OK" to access your web page/site.

A completed connection is indicated by the sound of a Freight Train, and you will see a window similar to the one.

An incomplete connection is indicated by the sound of a cockoo bird.  If your connection is incomplete, your configuration is wrong.  Check the settings in all boxes, click "Apply" then "OK."

DOUBLE CLICK on the folder/directory named public_html.  ALL the files (html, jpg, gif, etc.) MUST be inside this file for your pages to be viewed by the world.

The left column is a listing of the files on the computer you are working from while connected via FTP.  Select the files you wish to transfer by clicking the file name with your mouse.  This will highlight the file name.  You may need to use the arrow at the top of the column to navigate around your computer.  Holding the "CTRL" key while selecting the files will allow you to select more than one file at a time.

When you have selected the files to transfer, click the arrow which points to the right column.  This arrow is located between the two columns.  This will transfer the files from your computer to the AVCI servers.  You may repeat the selection and transfer process until all files have been transferred.

When the file transfers are complete, click the "Close" button to close your connection.  If you are finished, click the "Exit" button to close the progam.
